Sneakers Once Looted; Down Jackets Now Donated

Sneakers Once Looted; Down Jackets Now Donated: The store, KP Original Sporting Goods, was ransacked at night on July 7, 1992, during a neighborhood disturbance that started after a police officer shot and killed a man whose friends said was a street peddler and sometime bodega clerk in Washington Heights.

Other businesses owned by Korean immigrants were left alone as crowds raced through the streets. But looters smashed through the Hongs' metal security shutters and made off with 10,000 pairs of Nike, Reebok and other high-priced sneakers - the entire fall inventory.

So many people pushed and shoved their way in that the floor cracked under their weight.
