Man who began running to quit smoking finishes 100-mile race

Picture a map of Massachusetts. Andover is in the northeastern corner of the state, near the New Hampshire border. Pleasant Bay on the Cape is roughly 100 miles away by car.

Crazy to run 100 miles? Impossible?

Not for Andover resident Kevin Sullivan.

He completed the Vermont 100 Mile Endurance Run on July 19, finishing second in his class.

"I felt a great sense of accomplishment," he said. "It was a long road to get to that point, not just the 100 but all the training and setbacks. In the end, I ran as well as I could have that day and it was a great result, even better than I expected."

For this run, Sullivan's goal was to run the route in 16 hours, 16 minutes. He actually beat his goal time by running 16:15:19.40. According to the Web site, many of the runners finish in about 24 hours.

Sullivan has been running ultra marathons, he said, for the challenge.

Sullivan began running long distances more than 10 years ago. After graduating from law school, he needed to find a way to quit smoking, so he exchanged cigarettes for sneakers. He started out running a mile a day and then two years later ran his first marathon.

But he didn't stop there. He began running longer and longer races.

"I was motivated to push myself," said Sullivan.

The Vermont 100 Mile Endurance run accepts 300 runners. Unlike the Boston Marathon, the route of the race takes runners on dirt roads and hiking trails. Little of it is flat. Sullivan said over the entire course, there was around 1,500 feet of climbing up and down.

To train for something as grueling as running 100 miles, Sullivan did his homework, reading different training manuals. He found that training for this endurance run was much like training for a marathon, which he describes as "tough, but not as tough as some people might think."

He also has 10 marathons, five 50Ks, three 50-milers and a 100K race under his belt.

In the weeks prior to the race, Sullivan logged 80 to 100 miles a week. About 80 percent of the miles he ran in training were on local trails such as through the bird sanctuary at Phillips Academy.

During his training sessions, he usually was out the door before 5 a.m. When he is not training or competing in races, Sullivan works long hours as a corporate attorney and partner at his firm.

There is no time for stop to catch your breath in the Vermont 100-miler; there is a time limit to complete the course. Runners must finish within 30 hours for their time to count. Sullivan said he ran consistently, but he walked through the 29 aid stations along the route. He also said few runners can actually run the entire course without slowing to a walk.

Running 100 miles would be a mental challenge as well as a physical one. Sullivan kept himself focused by playing mental games while running.

"I broke it (the route) down in little pieces," he said.

Nutrition, says Sullivan, is extremely important for running 100 miles. Since he couldn't really stop for lunch or dinner, he literally had to "eat on the run." In addition to water, electrolyte drinks and energy bars, he said that during the race he ate two burritos, a banana, chips, watermelon and a cookie. He also ate pieces of crystallized ginger throughout the race, which he said settled his stomach while he was running.

Crocs, the popular plastic shoes that are reputedly as comfortable as they are ugly, may not be quite so “go-anywhere” as they seem.

Made of a soft, synthetic resin, Crocs were designed as a boating shoe because of their non-marking, slip-resistant soles. Their soaring popularity has been fuelled by their appearance on the feet of the likes of George Bush, Jack Nicholson and Kate Middleton.

The Colorado-based company, which only started five years ago, last month reported sales had jumped by 162 per cent, to pounds 110 million, from April to June this year."

But in Washington DC, the Metro, one of the largest American subway systems, has now put up warning notices about wearing such shoes on its moving stairways.

The posters don’t mention Crocs by name but feature a photo of a crocodile.

A Metro spokesman said that, in the past two years, so-called “shoe entrapments” had gone from being relatively rare to occurring four or five times a week.

In American Girl, an upmarket US toy store chain owned by Mattel, signs warn customers wearing Crocs or flip-flops to use the lifts instead of escalators.

There have also been Croc-related escalator incidents in Singapore and Japan as well as in malls and railway stations across America.

The Japanese government warned its public last week that it had received 39 reports of sandals - mostly Crocs or similar products - getting stuck in escalators between late August and early September.

Most of the reports involved small children, some as young as two.

In Singapore, a two-year-old girl wearing rubber clogs - the brand is unclear - reportedly had her big toe ripped off in an escalator accident last year.

A common pattern is that the accidents occurred because of the brightly-coloured, clog-like shoes’ flexibility and grip, supposedly two of their main selling points.

Some accidents reportedly occurred because the shoes got caught in the “teeth” at the bottom or top of the escalator, or in the crack between the steps and the side of the escalator.

In the US, a three-year-old boy wearing Crocs suffered a deep gash across the top of his toes on an escalator at Atlanta Airport in June.

A spokesman for the airport terminal said it was one of seven shoe entrapments since May, all but two of which involved Crocs.

During the past two years, shoe entrapments in the Washington subway system have gone from being relatively rare to happening four or five times a week during warm months, although none has caused serious injuries, said Dave Lacosse, who oversees the subway’s 588 escalators, the most of any US transit system.

Rory McDermott, four, caught a Croc in an escalator in a suburban Washington shopping mall last month.

His mother, Jodi, managed to yank him free, but the nail on his big toe was almost completely ripped off, causing heavy bleeding.

Durrenberger Engineering, Inc. was contacted and asked to convert or transfer the suite of Puma sneakers commercial spots to motion picture film format. PUMA requested to see the suite of spots that ran during the 2006 World Cup Games. The suite of spots was transferred to film by Durrenberger Engineering, Inc. and then sent off to PUMA in Jakarta, Indonesia, for screening.

Slip-on sneakers, in all styles and colors, are now stealing the scene.

Sneakers, it seems, have come full circle from the 1950s stark-white Keds to high-top Chuck Taylors to PF Flyers to LA Gear. The shoe that Michael Jordan turned into a legend has morphed into a fashion statement in the 21st century, with no laces no less.

The sporty canvas footwear has spawned a cult following. "Sneakerheads," or those who suffer from a sneaker fetish, are stomping their way onto the fashion scene.

This has had an impact on sneaker manufacturers, who are now creating lines that include street-couture styles. New Balance, which manufactures its shoes in Lawrence, has a casual women's slides called 801. Giovanni's Trends in Lowell is also walking this way.
