Sneakers Once Looted; Down Jackets Now Donated

Sneakers Once Looted; Down Jackets Now Donated: The store, KP Original Sporting Goods, was ransacked at night on July 7, 1992, during a neighborhood disturbance that started after a police officer shot and killed a man whose friends said was a street peddler and sometime bodega clerk in Washington Heights.

Other businesses owned by Korean immigrants were left alone as crowds raced through the streets. But looters smashed through the Hongs' metal security shutters and made off with 10,000 pairs of Nike, Reebok and other high-priced sneakers - the entire fall inventory.

So many people pushed and shoved their way in that the floor cracked under their weight.

Giants at home in Pacific Northwest

Giants at home in Pacific Northwest: Flaherty, Badgro and Hein were teammates on a 1934 Giants team that upset unbeaten Chicago in the NFL championship game. The Giants prevailed through a combination of luck (a winter storm that turned the grass field of the Polo Grounds into a sheet of ice) and resourcefulness.

Before kickoff, when it was apparent footing would be a factor, Flaherty approached head coach Steve Owen and suggested the Giants exchange their cleats for basketball sneakers. Sneakers, Flaherty told Owen, once worked on a slippery field at Gonzaga.

Giants trainer Gus Mauch, who worked at Manhattan College, summoned part-time clubhouse attendant Abe Cohen to rush over to the Manhattan campus and return with as many pairs of sneakers as he could find. Cohen either broke into the basketball locker_ the details are vague _ but he brought back nine pairs of sneakers after halftime.

Sneakers Claim To Change Health

Sneakers Claim To Change Health: "A $200-something pair of sneakers claims to change how you use your muscles, joints and spine.
So, do they work? WBAL-TV 11's Donna Hamilton put them to the test.
The manufacturers of the Masai Barefoot Technology (MBT) sneaker say their product's uneven sole transforms flat artificial surfaces, simulating how our ancestors walked around barefoot on uneven surfaces.
Hamilton wore the shoes for several days and found that her legs felt like they were getting a bit more exercise when she walked. She said the shoe are comfortable and offer plenty of support.

WBAL-TV 11 took the shoes to the Institute for Foot and Ankle Reconstruction at Baltimore's Mercy Medical Center for a more involved test."

Braving the Weather for Sneakers

Braving the Weather for Sneakers: Last night at Niketown a couple hundred sneaker enthusiasts, aka Sneakerheads, braved the rain for the Nike and Sole Collector Magazine sneaker collection competition.

While some collections were impressive, what most people were lined up for was a chance to purchase three limited edition sneakers. The man at the front of the line was waiting since Monday!

Perhaps the most amusing thing we spotted though was two children with shoes in hand and parents in tow, with the parents carrying chairs that the family waited in line with. Now that's family bonding.

Also amusing was one sneaker fiend who wore one pair that he was willing to get wet during the rainy weather and changed once he got inside the store.

Special Sneakers Aid Immigrants Run To The Border

Special Sneakers Aid Immigrants Run To The Border: Some new designer running sneakers are causing a major controversy in San Diego. The $215.00 "Brinco" shoes are intended to help people attempting to cross the border from Mexico into the U.S. "Brinco" is Spanish for "jump."

The high top sneakers come with a compass, flashlight and a pocket for money or pain relievers. A rough map of the border is printed on the insole. The shoes are red, white and green - the colors of the Mexican flag - and there's a picture of the patron saint of migrants on the back ankle.

The designer is giving away the specialty sneakers to illegal immigrants planning to make a run for the border. Judi Werthein is an Argentine artist who moved - legally -- to the U.S. in 1997. Werthein says she's an artist making a statement about people's feelings about immigration. And although she says she doesn't support illegal immigration, she wants those who make the dash across the border to it more safely.

Running sneakers

Running sneakers: I hope this doesn?t come as a surprise, but running sneakers are recommended when you?re running.

Ok. I?m sure you don?t really run just for the sake of it. But I can bet that you practice at least one sport that involves running.

Be it jogging, basketball or a Marathon. They all require special running sneakers, or else you wouldn?t be able to practice that sport for a while.

Old school sneakers

Old school sneakers: Old schools sneakers refer to the sneakers models that were popular back in the ?70s and the ?80s. They are generally a reminder of the rap and hip-hop culture that was emerging in that period.

The term ?old school? itself refers to something that is old, outdated, but not in a negative way. Old school involves a level of admiration for the past.

Nike Air Force One sneakers

Nike Air Force One sneakers: The Air Force 1 sneakers first came to life in 1982. Its name comes from the new Nike Air cushioning technology that the company patented the same year.

This ?Air? technology, for which Nike had exclusivity for 15 years, enabled them to manufacture sneakers at a previously unimaginable speed and quality, by using air at a high pressure. Other manufacturers finally managed to get their hand on this technique in 1997 when Nike?s patent expired.

Basketball sneakers

Basketball sneakers: Basketball sneakers are a very important piece of equipment when you want to play basketball. Without a good pair of special sports shoes, you can?t freely practice any sport.

It?s important to have the proper basketball sneakers each time you go play a game with your friends because of two reasons: they make you feel comfortable and allow moves that other sneakers can?t, and they offer safety. Without proper sports shoes, you can easily fall and injure yourself.

Skechers sneakers

Skechers sneakers: Skechers sneakers are manufactured by a relatively new company in the industry.

Skechers USA Inc. shoe company opened its doors in 1992, making it one of the young boys in the block.

While the big players in the sneaker making industry have a tradition or 40 to more than 100 years old, Skechers sneakers became in less than 15 years, if not a standard, at least a very popular piece of sporting equipment.

Diesel sneakers

Diesel sneakers: These sneakers are manufactured by the Italian clothing company Diesel.

Besides sneakers, Diesel also manufactures t-shirts, jeans, wrist watches and some fashion accessories. Their products are meant for men and women of all ages. They even make some very stylish hats.

Diesel sneakers have a distinct look thanks to the Italian background of its designers. They have a pure Italian style that makes them stand out from other shoes offered by the competition.

Vans sneakers

Vans sneakers: Vans sneakers appear to be quite popular these days. However, I couldn?t find any good information about them.

So I suppose Vans is a pretty new company that promises to become big in the near future.

It already has an identity of its own, as each vans sneaker has one thing in common: It?s old school. That?s a plus. Each company should have its own distinct characteristics, and Vans decided precisely what it should cultivate.

Converse sneakers

Converse sneakers: Converse sneakers are a type of shoes manufactured by another highly popular company, Converse. It?s been around for almost one hundred years.

The founder, Marquis Converse created the company in 1908 as a rubber shoe manufacturer.

The business really started to take off in 1918 when a baseball player in Massachusetts named Charles (Chuck) Taylor came to Converse?s company complaining that the sneakers he wore gave him painful calluses.

And some jokes

100 Funniest Jokes of All Time: Two campers are walking through the woods when a huge brown bear suddenly appears in the clearing about 50 feet in front of them. The bear sees the campers and begins to head toward them. The first guys drops his backpack, digs out a pair of sneakers, and frantically begins to put them on. The second guys says, "What are you doing? Sneakers won?t help you outrun that bear." "I don't need to outrun the bear," the first guy says. "I just need to outrun you."

A shoddy business

A shoddy business: A new documentary explores the journey of the humble sneaker from ghetto counter-culture to the very centre of global capitalism. Luke Benedictus reports.

Growing up in the Bronx in the early 1980s, Lisa Leone went to school with members of the Rock Steady Crew, the famous breakdancing posse. "We never thought of it like a 'movement'," the 39-year-old filmmaker says over the phone from New York. "It was just a bunch of kids dancing and having fun."

But even though hip-hop was still in its embryonic stages, footwear was already the ultimate expression of street style. "I had a pair of Puma Clydes and a drawer full of laces of all different colours," Leone remembers.

"Every night before school I would lay out my outfit and relace my sneakers with different colours - like the yellow with the red or something. I did it every night, like a religion."

Leone and Frenchman Thibaut De Longeville have put their shared obsession with sneakers to good use as directors of Just For Kicks, a documentary about "sneakers, hip-hop and the corporate game".

Store offers shoes of a different color

Store offers shoes of a different color : "I'm a firm believer that shoes make the outfit," said Star Pollard, owner of the new store, Stylin' Shoes by Star, inside Revelations Hair Salon and Beauty Supply, 1000 Kings Ave., Kingsland, on Georgia Route 40.

Pollard said she has always loved shoes, and after talking it over with her husband, she researched the idea of a shoe store.

That research led Pollard to a show in Atlanta where all of the wholesale dealers were pedaling their wares.

"I went and bought my stock," she said.

Pollard said she keeps more than 200 pairs of shoes in stock, and specifically sells the brands Nine West, J Renee and Bellini. She said she chose those brands because she wanted to mimic Phil's Shoe Store in Jacksonville, Fla., and so she could cater to all personalities.

J Renee, she said, is funky styles.

Stars fight over pair of sneakers

Stars fight over pair of sneakers: SOCCER - MBABANE Swallows and Mbabane Highlanders’ top players, Manqoba ‘Dunga’ Kunene and Mduduzi ‘Aghahowa’ Mdluli, are embroiled in a bitter misunderstanding over a pair of Adidas sneakers.

Information gathered by the Swazi Observer Sports Desk, is that the pair worth E720 was bought by Mdluli from Sneakers Sports Edition. He later sold them to Kunene because they were a smaller size, but the ‘deal’ turned sour.

So serious is the matter that it has since been reported to the Mbabane Police, who have launched investigations. “We agreed that he would pay me on October 25 when they got their allowances. However, that did not happen. I decided to report the matter to the police,” he said.

Mdluli mentioned that their transaction commenced on October 15 and when he went to Kunene after October 25, as per agreement, he was nowhere to be found.

MBT Sneakers

MBT Sneakers: MBT, which comes from Masai Barefoot Technology, has a philosophy which says that the look of the shoe is only secondary. The most important thing is the correct posture of the person wearing it.

Walking upright not only makes you looks good, it also keeps you healthier and stronger. The back and joints are strengthened, circulation is increased and breathing is more efficient. MBT lengthens and strengthens the whole body while standing, walking and in gentle running.

Reebok sneakers

Reebok sneakers: Reebok was created in 1890 for the best possible reason: athletes wanted to run faster than their opponents. To achieve that, Joseph William Foster started to manufacture, by hand at first, the very first running sneakers with spikes in them that would later become the most important trait of Reebok sneakers.

Reebok has exclusive right to manufacture and sell both original and replica uniforms for all teams in the National Football League, National Basketball Association, Canadian Football League and the National Hockey League. Reebok sneakers are the official footwear of NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball.

Adidas Sneakers

Stepping into Stuart's shoes

Stepping into Stuart's shoes: "Now, after spending the 2004 season playing the role of backup to Schollaardt, Gaultier has slipped into those quarterback cleats like a pair of comfortable sneakers.

'(Last year), Marcel got into a lot of games because we had a good team last year,' Prichard said.

'He spent a year in the system and when it was his turn to do it he knew what we were expecting.'

The will Sabres look to Gaultier to continue his fancy footwork as the team heads into the first round of provincials as they face the Peace Wapiti Academy Titans Saturday at 2 p.m. at Legion Field."

Puma will sponsor the World Cup

Zeitz said Puma will exploit the World Cup, increasing market spending next year ``significantly'' to close the gap with larger rivals Adidas sneakers and Nike Inc. He said Puma will promote itself as an alternative to the big two by promoting sponsorships with African teams on the coming months.

The tournament is due to begin June 9 and end a month later. Matches will be played in cities including Stuttgart and Munich before the final in Berlin.

Puma keeps going up

Puma AG, Europe's second-largest sporting-goods maker, raised its earnings forecast after U.S. sales jumped in the third quarter.

Net income will climb in the ``high single-digit'' percentage range in 2005 from 257.3 million euros ($307 million) a year earlier, Chief Executive Jochen Zeitz told journalists in Paris. Puma previously said the percentage gain would be in the ``mid to high single-digit'' range.

Puma, which has more than tripled revenue in the last four years, generated U.S. sales growth of 63 percent in the third quarter as it won orders for sneakers such as Future Cat and Alpine Trail Racer. Puma and its biggest European rival, Adidas-Salomon AG, are based in the same German town and both expect to benefit from next year's World Cup soccer tournament, which will be held in Germany for the first time since 1974. "

Puma Sneakers

Puma Sneakers: The company Puma appeared in 1948, when Rudolf Dassler leaved his brother with whom he created Adidas to create his own apparel company.

Nowadays, Puma is a powerful international company with factories all over the world and distributing products to more than 80 countries.

In the last few years, Puma became the most important chick brand in Europe. It is now a rule for European youths to wear a piece of Puma apparel. Wearing Puma sneakers or t-shirts is cool, if I may say."

The origin of Nike's logo

The swoosh logo that is now recognized by everyone, found on all Nike sneakers, was created in 1971 by a young student, Carolyn Davidson, for only 35$.

However, twelve years later she was fairly rewarded with a gold Swoosh ring with an imbedded diamond and a luncheon honoring her, along with an undisclosed amount of Nike stock, as recognition of her contribution to Nike's success.

Nike Sneakers

Nike Sneakers: Back in 1964, Bill Bowerman had the idea of producing cheap sports shoes that would be accessible to everyone. He was joined by Jeff Johnson and soon opened Nike's first retail store in Santa Monica, California.

The company was named after the Greek goddess of victory, suggesting the bright future to come.

Jordan Sneakers

Jordan Sneakers: In an attempt to help professional athletes in their career and promote its brand, Nike signed contracts with top sportsmen in the 80's. One of these was Michael Jordan, the best basketball player in history. This partnership led to the creation of the Jordan line, to which, Jordan Sneakers were added in 1985.

The first Jordan sneaker, the Air Jordan 1, was released in 1985, being received very well by the basketball fans all over the world. The blue and back or blue and white sneakers became a very common wear for children all over America.

Sneakers

Sneakers: It's important to have at least one pair of sneakers handy each time you go out. Whether you plan going to the woods with friend or family, or simply you go to the local shop to buy something for the house, sneakers are the first choice since they are light and very easy to put on.

How to choose a good pair of sneakers?

That's a simple task. Look for models that you really believe would look good on you. Once you have several pairs that you like, take a closer look at each. See if they are of quality, what material are they made of, the way the sole is glued."
